About The Nursery Ledger

The Nursery Ledger is an independent guide, written in English for gardeners in the United States, devoted to one subject: specialty plant nurseries and everything that happens between their catalogs and your beds. We cover how to find the real growers among the resellers; the specialty trades for roses, hostas, native plants and orchids; the mechanics of ordering plants by mail; the planting seasons that decide whether any of it takes; and the visits and questions that turn a nursery into a long correspondence.

How we work

Every claim on this site stays at the level a careful amateur can verify: trade vocabulary explained, ranges given instead of promises, and zones, temperatures and seasons published as bands rather than certainties. We do not review named businesses, we accept no payment for placement inside the guides, and when the trade has a weak spot, the virus that spreads with a dirty knife, the guarantee clause that surprises, the wild-collected plant sold as native, we say so plainly. The editorial policy states these rules in full, and the planting calendar shows the method applied to the whole year.

What we are not

We are not a shop, we sell no plants and we take no orders; every link from this site toward a purchase leaves the guide and enters the nursery’s own terms. Every article on the site is written and signed by this desk alone, which is why the desk page is the author page of the guide.
