The comparison depends on the specific supply chains, and no single figure covers all of them. Buyers who want a defensible answer should look for a life-cycle assessment for the specific crop and region rather than a general rule.

Buy untreated seed and a potting mix with a stated composition. Record germination and harvest dates. Compost what the kitchen produces if the building allows it, and check the local rule if it does not.

The point is not to reach self-sufficiency, which a city household will not reach, but to shorten a few supply lines and to know which ones remain long.
